The Great Outdoors

The playground in our complex has wood chips under all of the equipment, and when there are no other kids around Gavin likes to play in them. He especially likes to find and examine twigs and rocks. :)

I love the way this layout turned out. The elements are all digital, but the style is very paper scrapping.

When I saw this kit, I wasn't sure what to do with it at first. So, I started digging though all of the photos on the computer. I looked at ones with my sister when we were little, and then through years of scanned and digital camera pics! Finally, I scrolled all the way down to my wedding folder. This is my favorite pic of us from that day.

These are some of my favorite pics from our time in the hospital after I had Gavin. He was delivered by c-section on 3/11/2008 at 11:59pm. The poor kid got short changed by a whole day because the doctor didn't wait a minute.

Levi's 30th Birthday Cake

Here's a page to show off my husband's 30th birthday cake! Click the pic to get all of credit info.

Levi's birthday was in May, and I loved how his cake turned out. His favorite is white cake with white icing, which is just so boring to me. In February, I came across this blog post. I loved the pictures and how the cake looked when cut.

I was thinking about making rainbow cupcakes for my son's birthday in March, but I got really sick at the beginning of that week. His party was on Thursday, and I just wasn't up to it. So, I ended up just buying cupcakes for his party.

We had the party at Chuck E. Cheese, and that night he came down with croup! I ended up awake for hours in the middle of the night listening to him make that horrible cough, hanging out in the bathroom with the shower steaming up the room and then spending some quality time on my balcony in the cold air.

My parents and my MIL came the next day. And then when the grandparents were visiting there was too much going on so we grabbed an ice cream cake.

Obviously, this rainbow cake had been on my mind a long time! So, when Levi's birthday came around, I asked if he'd like the rainbow cake. He's usually up for anything I suggest and didn't let me down.

Instead of all that diet friendly recipe tweaking that the post up above does, I just made a regular white cake and added gel color to the batter before baking. Here's how they looked before stacking and icing.

And here's how it looked after icing, sprinkling on some candy sprinkles and adding the candles. I was a bit messy with the frosting, but it looks fun, right?

I won a Loopy Guest Spot!

Scrapbook - I Love Cake!

So a while ago, I did this layout of Gavin using a free kit called "The Cupcake Love Shop" by Fruit Loop Sally. She was running a contest for a guest spot on the FruitLoOp Team, and anyone who used her free(!) mini-kit could enter! And I won! So, I'll be getting to use her awesome products to create pages from now until the end of August.

I'm a little stressed over this, but I think it will be fun!

Updated my look!

If anyone's reading this, how do you like my new layout? I *love* it.

For the header and all of the background papers, I used the kit "Capture the Everyday," designed by Brynn Marie Dukes. Check her out at BZB Designs or in her shop at Elemental Scraps!

The paper curls and stitching are by Gunhild Storeide.

The font used on the header is Elephants In Cherry Trees from Kevin & Amanda's Fonts for Peas. I figured out how to design my own blog graphics by using Amanda's tutorial, too!

So... hey?

I've decided to try blogging again. There's nothing like waiting over a year between posts, right? My life isn't terribly exciting, but I'm feeling the need for an outlet. Let's see how long that lasts.

So, to start, I've changed my title from Pamelama to Monkey Eats Cardboard. Monkey is my son, Gavin's, nickname, and, well, he eats cardboard. Books, boxes... you name it and I've probably had to dig it out of his mouth. He's about 15 1/2 months old now. For his sanity and mine, I try to take him out a lot. So, hopefully, I'll be documenting our adventures.

Love, true love.

About a month ago, I saw the commercial for the Ped Egg. And let's just say, "Ewwwww," at the part where they open up the scraper thingy and show you what's inside. Which would be... lots and lots of foot scraping dust.

Personally, my feet don't get all dry and gross. They're quite soft and callous free. But, that's because I'm a weirdo and wear shoes, socks, or slippers all the time. If I'm at home all day, it's socks in the slippers. You know, just in case I want to kick the slippers off and put my feet on the couch. I understand that this is NOT NORMAL, but there you have it. And just for the record? I'd really rather not see your tootsies, or have them anywhere near me. And really not on my furniture. (Hi, Mom!)

My husband's feet? They are not so nice. Oh, my scritchy scratchy get 'em away from me. (And his big toes are shaped like McNuggets. His toe shape isn't important to the story, though.)

Why am I telling you this?

Because he bought me a Ped Egg for Valentine's Day. Seriously. It was nestled right in the bag with my candy and card.

Ummmmm?

I'd shown him the commercial because it was so icky, and because I saw the Ped Egg in the "As Seen on TV" section at Walgreens. While he was doing his (last minute, ahem) card shopping, inspiration hit! He thought that it would be funny to get me a Ped Egg of my very own.

The real gift is that he would use it on his own feet. Ah, the romance of it all!

He'd still better not get them anywhere near me.

And that's today. So far.

  1. Woke up. Decided that I needed another 15 minutes of non-movement.
  2. Hobble-walked to bathroom for shower. Showered.
  3. Had raisin bran for breakfast.
  4. And got dressed.
  5. Dried my hair.
  6. It was really snowy, and we only have one all wheel drive car, so hubby came w/me to check out the pediatric practice and meet with one of the doctors.
  7. Doctors' office is very close to Wawa, so we made pit stop on the way home.
  8. Got big ol' frozen Coke. (Which is even better when it's snowing, btw.)
  9. Came home, sent husband to work. Bye big car!
  10. Watched dvr'd episodes of Ace of Cakes, Big Brother, Medium, and the first bit of Commanche Moon. Commanche Moon is kind of awful. But, there's a scene where Val Kilmer is in a cage. Just like in Willow!
  11. Shopping surfed websites for nursing tops.
  12. Washed clothes.
  13. Made lunch. Mmmmm, lunch. I had not one, but two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. And a big ol' mug of frosty cold milk. It was extra frosty cold because I stuck it in the freezer when making the sandwiches.

And, um, yeah... The peanut butter and jelly had slices of cheddar cheese inside.

Being pregnant is awesome because I can do all of the weird stuff I normally do, and no one thinks it's bizarre.

13. Now I have to put the clothes in the dryer and wash sheets. Whee!

Even better than something sparkly for Mother's Day.

Since I got married in 1999 a lot of my friend have had weddings, too, and gone on to have kids. A lot of the time, after a new one if born, someone asks what the husband got the mom for a baby present. It's usually something sparkly... like a piece of jewelry w/the baby's birthstone.

I like the idea of something special to commemorate the hard work of actually carrying and giving birth to the baby. Especially since I'm the one who has to do it. :)

However, I think that I've actually outgrown the need for something expensive and sparkly. While sparkly is nice, it seems a bit impractical for someone who's going to be staying at home and has no fancy plans for anytime in the future. It seems a bit boring and impersonal, too, to have the same piece of jewelry that tons of other women are wearing.

I have Motherhood Uncensored on my Google Reader and today's post includes a contest for a small birth necklace by Julian & Co. How cool is this? I love that the baby's first name and all of the details people want to know (or eventually forget) are included on the pendant.

And that's how I knew.

Inspired by this post at Swistle.

We've been married since November of 1999, and together for a bit over four year before that. While we knew we'd like to have kids someday, we held off adding children to our family because, well, we were really young, poor, and nowhere near being done with school. I was on birth control pills for a looooong time.

When Levi finished with grad school and got the big grown up Ph.D job, we decided that we could finally start to try. We moved to New Jersey at the end of 2006, and I ran out of my stash of pills in January. It was official. We were "trying" to have a baby. For months after, I was hyper aware of when my period was supposed to arrive and trying not to read too much into any symptom I might be having. But, of course I did get my hopes up over and over. It was a difficult time for me. I'm not of "advanced maternal age," but I was 28 so I worried a little.

But, enough about that.

From November 2006 to December 2007, we only had one car. I drove Levi to work every morning, and then turned around to go home. I'd finish my morning routine and then go to my office. Most of the time, I drove because it was faster to boot him out and head home. In the evenings, I'd move to the passenger side. If the book I had with me was good, I'd read on the way home. I tend to get carsick, but not if I'm in the front seat or reading.

But, anyway, one weekday afternoon, I had him drive home. It was awful. I was totally nauseous the entire 40 minutes home. That day, I attributed it to Levi's driving. My boobs were *killing* me, too, but my period was due soon and that was normal.

A few days later, on Friday, I bought a pack of three stick tests. I took one and got a weird error. It was kind of, maybe, a little early to test. My last period was kind of funny, and I thought this one might be, too. I decided to wait a few more days before testing again, just in case.

On Sunday, I decided that I wanted to reread the last Harry Potter book before the new one came on on 7/21. I didn't finish on Sunday, and decided to ride and read while Levi drove to work Monday morning. Then, I'd drive myself home like normal. At the time, the drive to his office was about 20 minutes. By the time we got to his office, I felt awful. It was happening again! And I continued to feel sick all the way home.

I had planned to test again that morning, but Monday's are never easy for me, and I'd been too sleepy when I got up. Tuesday (7/18), I remembered to test and it came up pregnant almost immediately! I stared at it... hyperventilated for a minute and then yelled for Levi. Our bathroom was at the back of the house and he was asleep in the closed front bedroom -- shut in with a noisy window unit air conditioner and fan. He didn't hear me.

So, I took my shower and then put the test on the kitchen counter for him to see when he got up to make coffee. He finally stumbled into the kitchen. It took a minute for him to figure out what test was, but then he ran into the bathroom (I was still working on my washing my face and putting my contacts in) and hugged me. :)

Going by the first day of my last period, my due date is supposed to be around 3/15/08.

Goals for 2008

In no particular order:
  • Love the special time I have left with my husband before the baby is born. We've been together for over 12 years now and I am lucky to have found my love in my best friend. Our little super-duo is awesome.
  • Thank my husband for all of the sweet every day things he does for me.
  • Write here more about the good things we do and experience.
  • Get outside my head more often. I'm very much the introvert and live inside the bubble of my own little world most of the time. This has been really bad since moving to NJ and now PA. Not having my friends right there for me has let me shut down a lot.
  • Stay in better contact with my family. I'm awful about this, and I know it's part of the getting stuck in my own head problem.
  • Clean off my desk and keep it neat. Really, this shouldn't be so hard.
  • Clean the dust off of stuff regularly. I'm really allergic, so it's pretty stupid that I don't do this already. And it's gross.
  • Get my hair to grow out another 6 inches at least before deciding to cut it all off again.
  • Exercise every now and again. Dancing around the bathroom when I'm getting ready in the morning or for bed totally counts.
  • Enjoy my life. I really do have a good one.

So, let's review.

I really really suck at keeping up with my blog. Really. And most of it's a pretty boring blog to reread now that I'm playing with it tonight. So, why am I here? Specifically, I got on this evening to see what I wrote at the beginning of 2007 with regard to resolutions/life changes. Let's see what I wanted to accomplish...

******

It seems that mostly I wanted to read more-smarter-grown-up-stuff. Heh. Looking over the big 2007 book list, it seems that I did okay on classics (went on a bit of a Jane Austen and JA spin-off kick), but didn't manage to learn much of anything other than some travel do and don'ts, and that I really wouldn't have liked law school.

Since I'm planning on popping a kid out in 10 weeks or so, and I have a bunch of baby books on the way, I think I'll do okay on any new "learning" goal for 2008. I suspect that I won't finish 80 books again any year soon, though.

******

I didn't post many details about my weight loss, but I started the 6 Week Body Makeover on January 22nd. Over the next 10 weeks, I lost 27 pounds. I also lost 32 inches (in total) from my neck, shoulders, chest, biceps, forearms, waist, hips, thighs and calves. I think I went from a 1 or 2x on top down to a L or XL. And on bottom, I went from a 20/22 to a pretty comfy 16. Then, while I didn't go off the plan completely, I switched to more of a maintenance mode.

Most of my weightloss came from simply changing my diet. I found the eating plan for my type (B) really easy to follow once I got used to measuring everything out. After those 10 weeks, I still followed the eating plan for the most part, but didn't worry if I treated myself to desserts not on the plan, or if we felt like eating out. And I really did maintain the loss -- fluctuating up and then back down a few pounds, but I don't know anyone who doesn't do that.

I didn't do well on the exercise part of the plan. Let's just leave it at that.

Since July, when I found out that I was pregnant, all "diet" type plan went out the window. I haven't been weighing myself and my doctors never give me the number. I plan to start the makeover plan again after the baby comes and we (fingers crossed!) get into a more regular routine. Hopefully, there will be some exercise added to things, too. Maybe.
